Capcom has a history of releasing major fighting games within a certain window. More specifically, they tend to target major releases around February since March 31 marks the end of their fiscal year.
To highlight this point with notable examples, Street Fighter 4 was released on consoles on February 12, 2009, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was released on February 15, 2011, Street Fighter X Tekken was released on March 6, 2012, and Street Fighter 5 was released on February 16, 2016.
Although we know that Street Fighter 6 is slated for a 2023 release window, Capcom has not specified any further as to when we can expect to play the upcoming title. However, Capcom’s history of releasing major fighting games around February and March suggests that we wouldn’t have to wait too long going into 2023.
We also previously heard from Capcom themselves within their statement to investors (back in May of this year) that they have plans to release “major new titles” before the end of their 2022 fiscal year, which would be March 31, 2023. Indeed, there were plenty of reasons to hypothesize that Street Fighter 6 could be releasing fairly early into 2023 in either February or March.
However, the latest financial results report from Capcom now appears to be debunking this theory outright. Within the report, it’s stated that “the Company will work to achieve full-year guidance through measures such as the release of a major new title in the second half of the fiscal year.”
From now until March 31, 2023, it appears that Capcom only intends to release a singular major new title. Unfortunately for Street Fighter fans, we already know what this major title is.
It’s already been announced that Resident Evil 4 Remake is releasing on March 24, 2023 for the PC, the PlayStation 4, the PlayStation 5, and the Xbox Series X|S. Indeed, this is a AAA title for Capcom.
In other words, the very earliest that Street Fighter 6 could release with this in mind is April 1, 2023. However, we’re probably more likely to see a release window that’s even further than that.
One possible new release window that fans can speculate on is September 2023 as this would be the halfway point of Capcom’s 2023 fiscal year. Notably, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite was released on September 19, 2017.
As of right now, the characters that have been fully revealed for Street Fighter 6 are Ryu, Luke, Chun-Li, Jamie, Guile, Juri, Kimberly, Ken, Blanka, E. Honda, and Dhalsim. We’ve still yet to receive gameplay trailers for Manon, Marisa, Lily, JP, Dee Jay, Cammy, and Zangief, but Capcom has confirmed the presence of these characters within the game.
It wasn’t that long ago that Capcom hosted a “Closed Beta” build for Street Fighter 6 in which select participants were able to try out the fighting game for the first time. However, they’ve yet to host a public beta to truly stress test their servers. This is something that Capcom is hopefully planning for in the future, before Street Fighter 6 is released.
Of course, we’ll just have to keep waiting on official news about Street Fighter 6 from Capcom themselves.
