Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Seacrest and others get in on hilarious Spirit Halloween costume memes

It has become a popular meme across social media platforms just days before Halloween.

And Sarah Michelle Gellar joined stars including Lil Nas X and Ryan Seacrest as she shared her own entry in a series of joking posts parodying oddly specific Spirit Halloween costumes.

In a post from Wednesday, the 45-year-old actress shared a photoshopped image of costume package reading ‘Bad B**** Female Protagonist’ for ‘anyone is in need of a last minute Halloween costume.’

Her turn: Sarah Michelle Gellar joined other celebrities on Wednesday by jumping on a Spirit Halloween meme in which people photoshopped made-up costumes onto a package for the brand

The fake package added costume might include accessories such as a ‘Cocaine filled cross,’ a ‘Tiara and bouquet,’ a ‘Wooden stake,’ or a ‘Talking dog,’ reference some of Sarah’s biggest roles in Buffy The Vampire Slayer and the Scooby-Doo live-action movies.

The popular meme format takes a standard Spirit Halloween costume package and simply adds an absurd or even humorously boring costume.

Ryan Seacrest took the latter approach when he posted a photo of himself in a suit on a Spirit Halloween package.

‘Professional Talker,’ it read, ‘listing the accessories for the fake child-size costume as, ‘Suit, shoes, tie, gold microphone, extra virgin olive oil.’

Seacrest joked, ‘Unsurprisingly, there’s a clearance sale on these….’

Although plenty of celebrities and regular social media users had fun with the same format, Spirit Halloween’s official Twitter account weighed in to clarify that the costumes were all fakes.

One user seemed upset by a meme titled ‘Gay Guy,’ featuring a man with a pride flag draped over his shoulders, to which the brand responded, ‘This is not an officially licensed costume from our company. Photoshopping our packages seems to be trending at the moment.’

It added, ‘We will be passing this to our review team,’ though it’s not clear that the brand has any legal standing regarding the parodical posts.

One image featuring Charli XCX that was captioned ‘Royals Singer’ was a deep-cut joke referencing an interview in which the songstress was mistaken for Lorde, but simply played along.

Other joke costumes focused on more abstract concepts or groups of people rather than celebrities.

One poked fun at conservatives who have lately been sharing their fears about crime in major American cities.

The ‘Conservative guy scared of cities’ costume noted that the character ‘saw that thing on the news,’ complained there were ‘too many of “those” people there,’ “can’t park Ford Super Duty,’ and is ‘not scared, bro.’

There also appeared to be some miscommunications, such as a fake costume featuring a photo of Rhys Darby in costume from Our Flag Means Death,’ which had been captioned ‘Gay Loser.’

Darby’s wife Rosie Carnahan–Darby caught sight of the meme on Twitter and vented publicly.

‘I am hoping it is someone’s s*** attempt at humor and it is photoshopped,’ she wrote, later adding, ‘I had unfortunately already alerted Rhys’ team so the Halloween spirit people might get a call. Let’s hope he doesn’t see it, it is mean spirited. (pun intended).’
