Report: Josh Allen’s elbow injury ‘short-term,’ Bills QB expected to play through the pain

Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott is expected to give the latest on Josh Allen’s elbow injury on Wednesday when he meets with the media, but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport provided an update on Tuesday.

On the Insiders podcast, Rapoport said that his understanding is that Allen has a sprained UCL in his elbow.

“It is a UCL sprain, I believe is the proper term, which is a tiny tear. Some sort of an injury to his UCL (in his elbow), ”Rapoport said. “If you watch it in slow motion, it’s a lot worse.”

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo added that the injury puts Allen’s status for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings in question.

Allen suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 20-17 loss to the New York Jets. He went back to pass, began his throwing motion, and Jets pass rusher Bryce Hall hit his arm as he was letting the ball go, bending the back at the elbow.

Bills fans have been refreshing social media websites the past 48 hours hoping for any update on the quarterback’s injury. Rapoport added that it seems like it’s an injury that Allen will be “able to manage.”

“I do not know for sure, 100% sure that he will play this week, but it sounds like a short term injury and it sounds like something the team believes that he will be able to play through,” he said. “It’s not great. It’s not what anybody wants. However it’s possible this could have been way, way worse and we would have been talking about Case Keenum as the starting quarterback now.”

Two plays after Allen the injury on Sunday, he tried to connect with wide receiver Gabriel Davis on the deep ball. Despite expereincing “slight pain” in the elbow, Allen uncorked a throw that traveled 69.3 air yards, totaling the longest pass attempt in an NFL game in six seasons, according to NFL Next Gen Stats.

McDermott said on Monday that Allen loves to compete and be on the field with his teammates, so he’ll never count him out from playing.

“The medical piece we’re still evaluating,” he said. “I’ll know more — again for myself even — (Tuesday) morning a little bit more and then I’ll next talk to you guys on Wednesday and I’ll update you then.”
