Michael Myers fans have blasted the ending of Halloween Endsbelieving the horror icon did not deserve to be treated as weak and pathetic in the film, and have launched a petition calling on Blumhouse to reshoot the 2022 film’s controversial finale.
A Change.org petition, titled “Halloween Ends – Reshoot,” has been created with the hopes that it will convince director David Gordon Green and the rest of Halloween Ends‘ cast and crew to rewrite and reshoot the film’s ending so that Michael Myers can go out on a high note. “Halloween Ends was NOT a film that the Fans wanted,” argues the petition, stating that the threequel was instead an origin story for Rohan Campbell’s Corey Cunningham. At the time of writing, the petition has already amassed over 5600 signatures, with many seemingly agreeing that the fans “deserve a movie worthy of Michael Myers [and] tea Halloween Franchise” that will not leave them “sad, mad, disappointed, and Infuriated” or feature “a weak pathetic Michael who needed his mask to survive.”
Halloween Ends‘confusing and messy story has come under fire not only from fans and critics but from forming stars of the long-running slasher franchise. Scout Taylor-Compton and Danielle Harris, who starred in Rob Zombie’s Halloween and Halloween II, have heavily criticized Laurie Strode’s last stand against Michael Myers in the film. “It was a really cool story if it was about a new serial killer and what it was like for someone to become a serial killer … but then they just kind of threw Michael Myers in there, is what it seemed like to me, Taylor-Compton said. “I was mortified. I almost couldn’t look, I was so traumatized about what was happening. [An old and weak Michael is] not the Michael Myers that we deserve. That is not it.” Harris added, “Where are the kills? Where’s Michael? What the hell is going on?”
Jamie Lee Curtis Says Goodbye to Laurie Strode
Halloween Ends marks Curtis’ seventh and final time playing Laurie Strode, a role she originated in John Carpenter’s 1978 horror classic Halloween. The actor has played the character for almost 45 years, an actor-character pairing that is reportedly one of the longest in cinema history. Besides Halloween and Halloween EndsCurtis has also appeared in 1981’s Halloween II1998’s Halloween H20: 20 Years Later2002’s Halloween: Resurrection2018’s legacy sequel Halloween and 2021’s Halloween Kills.
While Curtis is ready to put Michael Myers behind her, Carpenter has hinted that the Halloween franchise is unlikely to stay dormant for too long given how financially successful the films have been over the years. “I guarantee you if Halloween Ends makes a lot of money, guess what? Just guess what,” Carpenter said, suggesting Hollywood would quickly greenlight a new Halloween film.
Halloween Ends is currently playing in theaters and streaming on Peacock.
